The Monocacy Battle is known as the "Battle that Saved Washington, DC." The Confederacy's bold plan to capture Washington, DC, and influence the election of 1864, was thwarted on July 9, 1864, by Federal soldiers outnumbered three to one, who fought gallantly along the banks of the Monocacy River in an effort to buy time for Union reinforcements.
